At the Mullany Fund, our belief is simple: that every young person should have the opportunity to access a career in the life science or science sector regardless of background.
Our definition of life sciences is broad, and over the last few years we have engaged hundreds of young people across South Wales, matching them with professional mentors and providing work experience opportunities and careers talks in school and online.
Our projects are aimed at young people aged 13-18 who are faced with barriers to progression in an attempt to improve their support network. We specifically target young people whose parents have never attended university; who are in or have been in the care system; who are in receipt of free school meals; and/or who live in specific WIMD postcodes.
Each mentoring session lasts 8-10 weeks, and once mentors have been matched with students based on shared interests they are guided through a series of support themes designed to promote discussion and exploration of their future options. Entirely online, our Mullany e-Mentoring project can be accessed wherever, whenever and doesn’t remove young people from the classroom.
We’ve already seen significant impact on the attitudes, aspirations and confidence of our service users during Phase I and the start of Phase II of our projects working initially in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, and subsequently expanding into Merthyr Tydfil, RCT and Bridgend.
