Community Music Wales (CMW) is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, which was incorporated in 1990. CMW is an organisation that works nationally. Its primary aim is to contribute to the empowerment of disadvantaged groups and individuals by enabling them to participate in creativity and learning through participation in music making.
CMW provides a wide range of music activity, including workshops, training and mentoring to communities across Wales. We have a reputation for excellence and currently operate with eight members of staff and around eighty community music tutors and mentors. It has offices in Cardiff and Caernarfon and provides a fully bilingual programme of work.
Our delivery of grass roots activity centers on participatory music workshops providing opportunities for creative music making to those who live in disadvantaged communities and have little or no access to the arts. The majority of our projects target people who are disadvantaged or suffer from social exclusion and aim to improve self-confidence, motivation and self-esteem. CMW’s work is often client led, and engages with groups with specific needs including disabled people, homeless people, those with drug or alcohol problems and young offenders. We are one of the few established Accreditation centres within community music and regularly write new units which form part of the national framework.
CMW’s greatest achievement is the way it continually develops new work – always innovative, always responding to the changing needs of Wales.
